Building footprints and site coverage for any Swiss parcel
footprint shows the buildings of Switzerland as footprints and 3D volumes on a map. Search an address or click a building or parcel, and a panel lists the building type, footprint area in m², volume in m³, height, address and parcel attributes such as plot area and construction zone.
Building footprint and coverage
Every building footprint comes from the official cadastral survey (AV). For a parcel you see the plot area next to the building footprint, so you can read how much of the site is covered. The legend colors each building by volume band and marks which volumes are measured and which are estimated.
Building density for an area
Drop a point and set a radius, or draw your own polygon of 2,500 to 250,000 m². footprint counts the buildings inside and returns:
- Total footprint area and the size of the queried area
- Total and average building volume
- Building volume per m² of ground
- Estimated utilization and gross floor area, based on a 2.8 m standard floor height
Map and sharing
- Switch between aerial imagery, street maps and swisstopo national maps
- Show buildings in 2D, as colored volumes, or as detailed swisstopo 3D models with real roof shapes
- Filter by residential type: single-unit or multi-unit
- Share a link or QR code to a parcel, or save an image of the current view
Frequently asked questions
How much of the parcel is built on?
Click the parcel. The panel shows the plot area next to the building footprint, and the footprint divided by the plot area is the observed coverage ratio. For a wider area, draw a polygon in Building Density and compare the total footprint with the area.
Does footprint show the coverage that zoning permits?
No. footprint shows the observed built coverage from surveyed building footprints. It does not show the coverage allowed by the zoning plan or building regulations.
Where do the footprints and volumes come from?
Footprints come from the official cadastral survey (AV). Volumes come from a 3D roof reconstruction where available, otherwise they are estimated from footprint and height or taken from the GWR building register.
